TSUNAMI SHELTER

A massive undersea earthquake is long overdue beneath the Mentawai islands and could cause a deadly tsunami. The site is located right above the Siberut Megathrust where the risk is the highest.

Despite their exposed location, most of the locals work as fishermen and therefore, they live along the coastline. It means all the local people are in potential danger.

The Tsunami Shelter design is focused on the people’s safety. Using the cylindrical form, the idea is to break the wave as it hits the building. It also has a freeboard area at its bottom so when a tsunami happens, the water can flow all the way through the building and leave the tsunami-resistant structure completely safe.

The design itself is based on the tsunami simulation and equipped with other tsunami-resistant building specifications.
