WEST PAPUA | 2018

bAHTERA NUH

Everyone knows the story of Noah and his Ark. This story has been passed down for generations in most Middle Eastern cultures and featured in the Abrahamic Religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

This project is a life-size Noah’s Ark with dimensions faithful to the Scriptures - 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high – can accommodate both religious and recreational activities. We divide the design into 3 zones, philosophically and cosmologically believed to represent the interconnecting relationships between Nature - Humans - and The Creator.

The lowest level contains animal sculptures portraying animals brought into the Ark. The ground level consists of the huge, Ark-like, functional building surrounded by wave-shaped landscape elements to represent the water– as water is believed to symbolize life’s beginnings. Water also featured prominently in Noah’s story as the flood decimated everything. And the top level is the prayer tower, designed in the shape of Tifa – the Papuan traditional musical instrument - where the building is going to be located.

The project is currently under development; construction will commence in mid-2019. We use an integrated BIM and parametric approach as our design method to ensure that this project is completely buildable even in Indonesia – a developing country where technology is still highly advancing.
